What Is Drywall?

Drywall installation involves a building’s interior wall being applied in a dry condition, without the use of mortar. Types of drywall include gypsum board, plywood, and fiber-and-pulp boards. These sheets are fastened directly to the frame of the building with nails, screws or adhesives, or mounted on furring (strips of wood nailed over the studs, joists, rafters, or masonry).

Common Causes of Drywall Damage

Knowing the common causes of drywall damage can help you prevent future damage. They include:

  • Water damage caused by interior or exterior leaks
  • Popped nails
  • Scuffs and/or dents from furniture or other objects
  • Loosened joint tape
  • Termite damage

It’s important to repair damaged drywall as soon as you notice it. Trust your Maine drywall contractors at Patriot General Contractors to provide you with the highest-quality drywall repair.

Difference Between Sheetrock and Drywall

We’ll let you in on a little secret: Sheetrock is just a brand of drywall! Drywall is a panel made of gypsum board, plywood, or fiber-and-pulp boards are pressed between two sheets of paper, and Sheetrock is simply a brand of drywall that is a registered trademark of the U.S. Gypsum Company.

Types of Drywall Repairs

Different types of drywall repair depend on the type of damage and its severity. The drywall will be patched, repaired or replaced.

Patch

  • Holes: Small holes (like ones caused by door handles hitting the wall when opened and causing damage) can easily be patched and painted to look good as new!

  • Nail holes: One of the most common causes of drywall damage is also one of the easiest to fix! In most cases, holes will be filled with solution, sanded and painted.

Repair

  • Cracks: Cracking drywall can indicate larger problems, like shifting foundation and water damage. Once the cause is found, one of our general contractors can fill the crack.

  • Holes larger than six inches: The easiest way for us to repair holes of this size is to replace just a section of the drywall. We’ll cut a piece big enough to cover the damaged area, put it in place with joint tape and compound, sand and paint.

Replace

  • Water damage: Whether it’s from a leaky roof or burst pipe, drywall that’s seen water damage should be replaced. The sooner you stop the leak, the less drywall you’ll need to replace.

Termite damage: If you notice pinholes in your walls, peeling paint and crumbing baseboards, you may have a termite infestation. Once the termites are removed from the house, we can get started on repairs as long as the foundation hasn’t been damaged and there are no other structural issues. Damaged sections of drywall will need to be removed and replaced.

What Does a Drywall Repair Jobs Include?

If you’ve never had to have your drywall repaired before, you might not know what the job entails. When you contact the residential painting and drywall repair experts at Patriot General Contractors, here’s what you can expect during a drywall repair:

  1. Sanding: In order to best repair your drywall, we’ll likely have to sand around the damaged area. This removes any raised areas, debris or rough spots that can make a repair less effective.

  2. Repairing: Depending on the type of damage (like the ones outlines above) we’ll use the correct method to ensure your walls are restored.

  3. Painting: Once the spackle has dried and the repaired areas have been wiped down, we’ll get to work on repainting the walls.
