Deck Construction Process

While constructing a deck is a large task, the most work you’ll have to put in is calling Patriot General Contractors! We’ve outlined how our deck builders tackle deck construction projects of any size.

Getting Started:

  • Check codes and permits: This is one of the most important parts of the process! We’ll search for code requirements in your town to make sure your new project meets the standards for your area.

  • Planning: Once we determine the parameters for your deck, we can get started on the fun part: planning your custom deck! We’ll discuss all options for wood type, stain, stairs, railings, size, and anything else you want to add!

  • Prepare the area: Before we get to construction, we have to do some prep work. This includes removing dirt and weeds, and leveling the area. We will also mark the area where the ledger board will go (where the deck attaches to your house) and where the footings will be.

The Construction Process

This is where you’ll see your vision come to life! Here are the steps we take to complete the build:

  1. Placing the ledger.

  2. Digging holes for footings and posts. Once the footing have been placed, we’ll fill the holes with cement to keep them in place. This can take one to three days to dry.

  3. Adding support beams and joists. This makes up the frame of the deck.

  4. Laying the deck boards.

  5. Adding stairs and railings. Both of these increase the safety and accessibility of your new deck.

Custom Deck Design

Whether you already have a layout in mind or want insight from our deck contractors, we’ll bring your vision to life as quickly and efficiently as possible! Here are some things to consider when choosing the right deck for you:

  • Deck uses: Large decks are perfect for hosting big gatherings, while smaller ones provide a comfortable, more intimate way to unwind at the end of the day.

  • Home style: Your deck should complement your home, so it’s important to consider size, colors, style and materials when planning your deck.

  • Your yard: Factors like yard size, existing areas and landscaping all play a part in determining the dimensions of your deck.

Classic Deck Designs

While each deck we build is unique, there’s nothing wrong with choosing a common shape to get started! Here are some of the most frequent types we build:

  • Raised deck: Usually rectangular in shape, this deck is ideal if you’re looking for an all-purpose outdoor space. This option usually suits most homes and yards, so it’s a great place to start if you don’t have a specific vision in mind.

  • Wraparound deck: This option is great if you have limited space and want to make the most of multiple views of your property.

  • Square deck: This option doesn’t need to be connected to your house. It is perfect if you want to add more space to a patio or an area around a pool. Frequently, these decks are low to the ground, so you won’t need to add stairs or a railing in most cases.

Decking Materials

When you hire Patriot General Contractors to design and build your deck, you can be certain we are using the best materials to get the job done. Here are some common decking materials we use for our projects:

  • Cedar: As one of the higher-quality deck materials, this natural wood gradually weathers, which decreases the need for yearly maintenance. Because it contains natural tannins, it’s resistant to decay and insect infestation.

  • Pressure-treated wood: This deck type is typically pressure-treated with insecticides and anti-rot properties, which helps it last longer.

  • Hardwood: As the name suggests, this type of wood decking material’s strength makes it a great option. Like cedar, it also contains natural tannins that protect it from environmental factors.

  • Composite decking: This option generally combines multiple different materials to create a new product. It’s durable and comes in a variety of colors, making it a popular choice.

  • PVC decking: Although it’s not made of wood, there are many colors, styles and patterns that can mimic the style and texture of wood. Because it’s made from plastic, it’s less vulnerable than wood.

Our carpenters will be supplied with all the necessary materials and bring their own tools, so all you’ll have to do is watch them transform your outdoor space!
